The first catechists in any child’s life are the family members with whom he or she lives. What happens at home – both positive and negative – provides lessons for life. In the family, faith is shared as part of the unfolding of daily life. The home or “domestic church” provides a real place in which a child learns to live his or her faith as well as understanding it.
Our goal is to create a program of lifelong faith formation that is centered in and flows out of the events of Church life. Through the evangelizing community active discipleship is promoted by way of sharing knowledge of the faith, prayer and worship, moral formation, and service. Our Pastorate seeks to foster full and active participation by our young people in Sunday prayer and worship, in turn strengthened and nourished by the Eucharist to “go out” and live a Christian life of love and service in the world. We offer Faith Formation programs that strive to meet the needs of families that catechizes in a way that also promotes faith growth at home and participation in Church life.

Linda M. Baer, Faith Formation Coordinator
Classes for this Year - Choice of "In-Person" or "Home Study"
Last year was a challenging year, as we did a Home Study Program, with Pflaum Publishing. This year’s Program will also be Pflaum Publishing, for Kindergarten thru 8th Grade. The good thing about the Pflaum Program, is that it can be used for in-classroom or home study. We are hoping to offer both this year.
In-Classroom Sessions will be from 9:00 AM – 10:00 AM, at Saint Joseph’s Church, beginning around Sunday, September 19, 2021. The Home Study Program will take place at Home, just like last year.
You will have to come to the Church on a designated day to pick-up your Units. Like last year, there will be 4 Units. First Unit pick-up will be Saturday, September 11, and Sunday, September 12, 2021, times will be announced later. We also hope, to bring the Home Study Program together for a Group Activity at least once during each Unit.
In addition to the Pflaum Program, we will also be doing a Family Life Program, and the publisher for this curriculum is RCL Benzinger. It is a 10 Week Program, that is incorporated, with the Pflaum Program Teachings.
First Sacraments for this Year
First Reconciliation and First Eucharist Programs will start in January 2022.
We will have a First Reconciliation Retreat in late February or early March. The First Reconciliation Service will be in Early Spring.
We will have a First Eucharist Retreat in April, with First Eucharist Masses, taking place in the Month of May, at various Masses.
If your child still needs to make their First Reconciliation and Eucharist, please let us know. I know that some of your children put off making their First Sacraments due to the Pandemic.

First Sacrament Prep Fees - $50.00 per Child

We are in the process of assembling a wonderful Team of Catechists, this year. However, we are still looking for Catechists for Grades 5th, and 7th.
We are always looking for “extra” helpers, as Substitute Catechists, and Special Event Helpers, etc. We also have monthly or bi-monthly Catechist Meetings. We do offer training to Catechists, on the materials that you will be using during the year.
We are always in need of Aides for our younger classrooms - would be good for a High School Student who needs SSL Hours.

High School Youth Ministry
Youth Ministry offers fun, innovative opportunities for spiritual growth and development. Events are geared toward service, discussion, catechesis and community building. Youth ministry events are open to all high school students of the parish. The expected outcome of participation in youth ministry events are a better sense of living as a Christian in the world and an understanding of what it means to be in the Church. Offerings for this school year will be dependent on current Covid restrictions as mandated by the Archdiocese of Baltimore and common sense.
Child and Youth Protection
Our Pastorate, along with the Archdiocese of Baltimore and the entire Church strive to produce a healthy and nurturing environment for children and youth. We are dedicated to making sure our church is a safe environment for them. Virtus is a process by which we promote healthy ministry by seeking to engage competent qualified volunteers and employees. To protect children and youth, volunteers and employees are screened for their fitness to work with minors. Please visit www.virtus.org to learn more and complete the screening.
